it was the week of christmas, 1998. i was roughly 6 years old. one night, right as i was about to drift off to sleep, i heard a strange garbled voice under my bed.

“a-tay” it whispered.

naturally, i was scared shitless.

things were quiet for a few seconds, and then- 

“aaa-taaaay”

and another voice joined in

“doooo-maaaah”

i did not sleep, did not get up to use the bathroom. for hours, the two voices chanted, “a-tay doo-mah a-tay doo-mah”

finally morning came and i ran from my room as quickly as possible, refusing to go anywhere near my bed. however, my parents forced me into bed that night around my usual bedtime of 8 pm. it was quiet, so i thought maybe things would be alright.

“DOO-MAH”

or not. i prayed to god that the devils under my bed would just take me and get it over with, but they just hissed to each other. this continued for the full week. christmas came and went. the voices persisted. i was starting to think i was crazy or possessed. it was almost new years when my mother came in my room one night because she heard me crying. when she heard the voices, she was terrified at first-

until she remembered that she and my father had hidden two furbies beneath my bed- they’d meant it as an early christmas present, thought it would be fun for me to find them myself. that’s it. that’s how i got my furbies. furbies are literally the reason i stopped believing in god at the age of 6.
